New Year, New Art

Happy New Year!
I took about 3 weeks off from painting, which I do at the end of the year to give myself a break. We all need a break, even from the things we love most! I tend to do other creative things during this time, fun things I just don't have the time for usually...decorating topiary is what I did this year. Using yarn and other embellishments. Found out I really love doing it and may do it on the weekends and try to sell them on Etsy. I already have the name picked out for the shop...A Path in the Forest.

I always get nervous doing my first painting of the new year. Somehow I think it's suppose to set the tone for the year. Or something. But this year it seemed worse. Almost like I was afraid to begin. Weird, I know. But when I did, it just flowed from me like I had never taken a break.

I was inspired by my daughter, Ashley.

The Outpouring Of Love

This painting may feel a little darker than some I have done, but it's really not meant to be. It's more a reflection on the mental illness my daughter faces. She has Borderline Personality Disorder. To sum it up in a few words, it's an emotional disturbance. Every emotion she feels is 100 times more intense....which can be good for the positive emotions, but very bad for the not so wonderful ones, especially guilt. More borderlines kill themselves because of the guilt they feel than anything else. The problem is, once a borderline is well enough mentally to be self aware, the guilt kicks in and has to be overcome. They feel no one could ever really love them becasue they have done so many things wrong in the past when they were very ill.

The hearts near the cottage represent our love as a family poured out on Ashley, over and over. Even though she is on the darker side of the painting, you see her begin to accept that love and understand she deserves it. She is on the road to recovery, but recently I saw just how hard it is for her. When she says she doesn't understand why I love her. It hurts to hear, but it is how she feels. How many ways can you tell a child you love them? I don't know, but I say an infinite amount:)

Even if you haven't faced or know someone with mental illness, I think everyone can relate to the feeling of guilt and just wanting to be loved. It's what we all want.

Freeing My Heart

Freeing My Heart is a painting that speaks to the heart...if you don't put yourself out there and love fully, you won't really ever receive it. Guarding your heart may protect you from getting you hurt, but it will likely never lead you down the path of love.

Dreams At Sunset is just a fun and whimsical painting that let's one's imagination run away, as in a dream:)

Remembering Christmases Past

My kids are all close to being grown (my youngest is almost 16), so I have been thinking back to Christmases from our past, when they were little. Creativity, in it's many forms, has always been a part of our family traditions. From creating our own crafts to watching the creativity of others through movies, to cooking up some delicious food, creativity was and is always present in our home.

One of my favorite memories is coming down at 6am and finding my son, Keegan (who is now 18 and in college) laying on the couch on Christmas morning. He was watching the 24 hours of "The Christmas Story" on TV. How long have you been up, I asked him. Oh, I don't know, he said, enough to watch this show several times. Several times? We would tell the kids not to wake us until 7am, but if they wanted to come down and watch TV, they could. I don't remember exactly how old he was, but I remember how cute he was about it. He was always the one that would make sure we had plenty of milk and cookies for Santa. Little did he know Santa was lactose intolerant and Mrs. Clause had to drink it. I seem to remember being the one eating the reindeer's carrots, too.

Ever since my sister introduced us to the wonderful film, "The Christmas Story," it has been the one constant Christmas entertainment for us, even when the kids refuse to watch Rudolph anymore! I think somehow we all can relate to this somewhat dysfunctional yet loving family of yesteryear. It's A Wonderful Life is also a favorite! Christmas Eve is when we watch them both.

Decorating sugar cookies is another tradition. Watching all three of my children letting their artistic creativity take over as they piled frosting several inches high on each cookie with sprinkles fluttering down the sides was amazing to watch! Even funnier to see those stained red and green cheeks and tongue! And the mess could be enormous! But I would not of changed a thing!

We also for many years would make cinnamon gingerbread ornaments (the ones you made with applesauce, cinnamon and glue) that the kids would decorate. I loved the way our house would smell after making them. We would put little velvet clothes on them and lots of glitter! I still have some of those ornaments today.

It takes a good eye to decorate a tree, but when they were young, it didn't matter. Somehow they got such joy out of cramming as many ornaments in one spot as they could. Why DO they do that? Their eyes would sparkle with pride when they were done! Many of the ornaments were ones they made at school. Most of those years I was a room mom for each of the kids. Having those holiday parties was so much fun! I would always be the one volunteering to bring in the craft:)

So our Christmases do include many forms of creativity. This year we are making candy as a family and we will welcome my sons' girlfriends to join us. The more the merrier, I say:)

Holding on To Happiness By Juli Cady Ryan

I find that I am at my happiest when I take the time to be thankful...not just at Thanksgiving, but every day. Sometimes we overlook those little pleasures that comfort us each day. I am always thankful for the big things (family, friends, health), but I also try and appreciate the small: a good cup of coffee, a cat on my lap, a good book. It's in these little treasures that we can find daily happiness.

The Cat Lady: The importance of cats in my art

I admit it. I will eventually be that "Cat Lady" down the street. It's hard for me to resist a stray. But they know from the moment they set their eyes on me that I am a sucker for them. And I am doomed.

Just a few of the many cats we owned!

It all started when I was young living on a farm. People would drop strays off near our home or one would just show up. So after years of this, we literally had to buy cheap feed bags of food for them from a feed store.

They all had names and unique personalities. They all were special to me. My favorite part of the day would be feeding time. They would follow me from our front door down the concrete steps toward the barn like a cat parade. Tails in the air they knew it was feeding time!

The real story is that these cats gave me so much more than I gave them. When I was sad or lonely, they would sit on my lap and just listen. They would comfort me like no human could. Living in a dysfunctional family where mental illness was ever-present, I needed to escape to the barn for some cat solace. They helped me heal.

Then later in my life when my own daughter was facing mental illness, my cat Fran would still comfort me. He'd know when I was sad and come and sit by me while I painted. Such a good friend. But I did not realize how good of a friend he would be until a few years ago. He helped save my daughter's life by waking me up after she overdosed. If he hadn't came scratching at my door, I would not of heard my daughter cry out and would not have got her to the ER in time.

I am a photographer and a novice painter, my passion is abstract art. I live in a relatively small village, Goodsoil Saskatchewan Canada. It a farm community of 300 people bordering the Boreal Forest. The fishing is great and from what I hear the hunting is outstanding and the peace and quiet is wonderful.

I was born in Edinburgh Scotland and lived in Blackhall until I was 10. WE moved to Canada and put down roots in Oakville Ontario this is where my family still lives.

I spent most of my life in the Canadian Army and retired in 2002, In 28 years of service I managed to see most of the world. There’s something very soothing and calming about these water drop/condensation shots for me. Maybe it’s the perfect symmetry of the drops or the way they look like falling rain that’s frozen in time… either way they just make my stressfulness melt away.

Anyway, this is condensation on a water bottle… I shot this using my macro lens and extension tubes as well as my flash. I don’t think I had a background on this one.. just the white screen of my computer.

I have always been interested in photography and capturing the world I see. Sometimes I think I see everyday objects differently than other people and I hope that is evident from what you see in my work. Macro photography was what I was really drawn to when I started to become serious about photography about a year ago. There’s something exciting and bizarre when I see something I normally wouldn’t see with my macro lens.

The Controversial Shepard Fairey

What is Shepard Fairey if not controversial? His art is his own, yet it is not. He has been arrested for vandalism (graffiti) and has been in court defending his use of a photo for his most famous work of art, Hope, of Barack Obama, without giving monetary payment to the Associated Press. Nor did he give credit to the photographer for AP, Mannie Garcian. So who is this artist?

I didn't even know who Shepard Fairy was until the Hope poster was created. Then last year, some of his works were being shown in the Cinncinati's Contemparary Art Museum and my family went to see it. We all were fascinated by his art, especially my son, Keegan, who has shown some real interest in drawing and in art the last few years. His bold statements and colors were captivating. My family went to a restaurant in Cincinnati that had his art on the wall across from their building....this is me and my sister Tammy.

One of his harshest critics, MARK VALLEN, has this to say about Fairey:
"Most well known for his "Obey Giant" street posters, Shepard Fairey has carefully nurtured a reputation as a heroic guerilla street artist waging a one man campaign against the corporate powers-that-be. Infantile posturing aside, Fairey’s art is problematic for another, more troubling reason - that of plagiarism. " He also goes on to say, "What initially disturbed me about the art of Shepard Fairey is that it displays none of the line, modeling and other idiosyncrasies that reveal an artist’s unique personal style. His imagery appears as though it’s xeroxed or run through some computer graphics program; that is to say, it is machine art that any second-rate art student could produce." http://www.art-for-a-change.com/Obey/index.htm

Milton Glaser agrees with Vallen. "I find the relationship between Fairey’s work and his sources discomforting. Nothing substantial has been added. In my own case, when I did the Dylan poster, I acknowledged using Duchamp’s profile as an influence. I think unless you’re modifying it and making it your own, you’re on very tenuous ground. It’s a dangerous example for students, if they see that appropriating people’s work is the path to success. Fairey has referred to what he does as “referencing.” There’s certainly plenty of precedent for making reference to older artwork in new ones. How does one distinguish between plagiarism and reference?

In response to these critics, J O’Shea states:
" [T]he concept of using reference images in the context of modern art seems to have eluded Vallen completely in regards to Fairey’s art. When he claims that Shepard strips away historical meaning and context in his artworks, he’s missing the entire point of referencing: By taking precisely the elements of an image that speak of its historical meaning and original context and incorporating them into a new image, an artist creates a visual comparison, juxtaposing new and old. Such a contrasting is inherent in the act of referencing, and the intended result is for viewers to consider the relationship of the two images and hopefully spark a dialogue: Are they really distinct, or just symbols of the same phenomenon? Is the artist saying the two images are similarly or differently relevant? Is the older image outdated and in need of an update, or is it a commentary on society’s perverse obsession with overhauling classic works? Does this new recontextualized image make me feel any differently than the old one did?"

With all these issues, Fairey's messages calling for social and political change seem sincere; he donates heavily to causes and he keeps a staff of assistant artists gainfully employed. Note too that many parallels can be drawn between Fairey's image sources and those of Andy Warhol, who is now celebrated in the art world.

So who is Shepard Fairey, REALLY? I can't make up my mind, either. He's a complicated and talented artist. He has good sides and bad. But then again, don't we all?

Project Compassion: A Salute to Fallen Soldiers

It was Memorial Day and I watched The View on TV. I was blown away by Project Compassion. Kaziah Hancock was on today's show to talk about Project Compassion, an organization she oversees which paints portraits of fallen heroes. The mission of Project Compassion is to reach the family of every fallen American in uniform since September 11, 2001, for the sole purpose of giving them an heirloom quality tribute to their hero. Kaziah and her team of artists hand paint portraits of these fallen heroes. It touched my heart to see the dedication and love these artists have. When presented to a family, these paintings are truly priceless.

Kaziah Hancock - With an honorable release as a disabled veteran my father passed away one week before I was born. My Mother raised five children on the Army pension check so I've always had respect for the deceased.

I love art. Art has the power to change the mood and disposition by allowing me to enter another realm where life is good. I realized the kind of art that I wanted in my home was totally out of my reach unless I could unlock the secrets of the master painters to tap into their genius. I have studied the works of many masters looking for the common denominators of what makes that work extraordinary. I have been influenced by all of them. But my work is not like any of them. Twenty six years in this endeavor I have tried many different styles and techniques and of course color combinations and compositions some bold, some paintings like a whisper. Some of the people that know me consider me a genius others a dumb ass for not being consistent with one style but I refuse to settle into just one frame of mind. If work becomes repetitious and potentially boring, I don't do boring! Not in life or art! By my pursuing pure raw gut instinct along with the principals of art, life always presents options of opportunity. After all, I am not trying to impress anyone. I am not running for any office or asking anyone to serve me. All I want is the freedom to live my American dream on my ranch with my previous goats, cats, chickens, ducks, geese and my golden lab, Cookie, in the hope that the art I create will bless the lives of those who come to own a Kaziah original.

I started painting fallen soldiers in March of 2003 as a simple act of kindness to honor the honorable, to say to the families that someone gives a dam. Although I have never met the soldier or their families in life, I have come to meet some of the highest quality of human beings and that by knowing them and the high cost in human lives for all that we have in America, I try not to waste anything. Not time, food, clothing or my mind. I am very frugal so that I can afford to be generous. Life is too short for all of us so when I join the fallen soldiers I want to have a clear conscience when I give them a hug. They have my respect, my heart, so of course I continue to give them my hands.

ABOUT THIS IMAGE
This is the very first image in my Striped Emotions series. I am still working on the other images in this series. I like challenging myself in new ways, with my self-portraits. And i thought it would be interesting to see if i could make it look like i was interacting with myself . . . in some way.

I shot this series against a green screen. The background was taken from a photo-shoot i did at an industrial site in Seattle, Washington. The watchman was kind of enough to let me onto the grounds and gave me a tour and all access pass with my camera.

I wanted to convey the extreme sadness i feel with manic depression. Over the years i have discovered that sadness is often anger, spread really thin, masquerading as melancholy. Anger is an emotion i have a very difficult time allowing myself to feel and express, i often repress it. As a child i was not allowed to express my feelings or my anger.
There is a detachment that comes with sadness, a disconnect from the self, from the world . . . BUT i am in a good place at the present moment and i am getting better at managing the emotional tidal waves that manic depression brings.

The May Essex Art Walk

I do the Essex Art Walk 2-3 times a year. What I love about the art walk is that you can meet a lot of people, both artists and art enthusiasts. It's an up-close and personal experience. Some of the artists even work right in front of you sketching, sculpting, even melting glass! It's an exciting way to really talk to artists and see them in action.

This May we were treated to JJ's Flameworking Studio right across from me. He created some lovely flowers, some even with tiny bugs on them! If you are interested in JJ's work, contact him at jjsglassstudio@gmail.com

Tom Tsuchiya was also present at the Essex doing some sculpting. I did a feature on him last week, so check it out if you haven't already:) Here is his website: http://tomtsuchiya.com/index.htm Tom has been commissioned to replace the Jesus sculpture that was struck by lightning at the Solid Rock Church of Monroe, Ohio, well-known for being called the "touchdown" Jesus for his hands were reaching up to the sky. The new Jesus will be reaching forward, according to Tom.

Tom shares a studio at the Essex with fellow sculptor, Hughes Sparks. Here's a little about Hugh:
Hughes Sparks has lived in Cincinnati, Ohio most of his life. He looks to nature for both inspiration and technique in how to create vibrant, meaningful work. Essex Studios May Art Walk!

It's almost time for the Essex Studios Art Walk. This is an art walk I have done for the last few years and really enjoy. I get to meet so many types of artists (over 100 have studios) of all different ages and backgrounds, it's really a great experience! If you live in the Cincinnati area, it would really be worth the trip!

A Little about the Essex...
"The Essex building at one time was a large tailoring business. Essex Studios resulted from the decline of the tailoring business. Owner Trent Heimann decided to sub-divide the building into studios for local artists and organizations. Work started in 2000 and it is still going on today.

Every art form is represented by the more than sixty Resident Artists at Essex Studios. The diversity is fantastic. It is a building of diverse arts. Come get a good feel for the arts by touring the facility during the Essex Studios sponsored Art Walks."

Here is one of the sculptors who has a studio at the Essex, Tom Tsuchiya. He has done some very notable art for Cincinnati: From 1990 to the present, Tom has completed many private and public commissions. In 2000, he unveiled his first major work: the larger than life-size bronze of D'Artagnan for Xavier University. The success of this sculpture led to the commission of the statues of Cincinnati Reds players at Great American Ball Park. These life size bronzes were finished by the summer of 2004.

Here is a little about Tom and his sculpting in his own words:
I am known for creating sculptures that have a sense of vitality. To achieve this vitality, nature is my main source of inspiration. I abstract from the rich and varied shapes and movement of people and animals. From these abstractions, I develop ideas that enable me to instill that living, breathing quality in my sculptures.

My childhood fascination with Greek art led to my interest in sculpting. While I pursued a B.A. in Classical Civilization from the University of Cincinnati, I apprenticed with the master sculptor Richard J. Miller. This apprenticeship was the most important education of my life. From Miller I learned about many aspects of sculpture from design philosophy to working with bronze, clay, plaster and digital media.

Art is Everywhere in Madrid, Spain!

My son, Keegan, was lucky enough to be able to go on a class trip to Madrid, Spain for a week. When I saw the photos he took, I could not believe the beautiful architecture, parks, trees and well, just everything! Art was everywhere! So I couldn't help but share these wonderful treasures of Spain with you:)

I have to admit the trees really fascinated me the most because I thought, "I have to paint those!" So whimsical and fun!

Japan: Machine Civilization: We Are All One

“Machine Civilization” is the fabulously choreographed music video by World Order, the celebrated Japanese music/dance performance group led by former martial artist Genki Sudo. The video features slow-motion breakdance voguing Japanese businessmen, released along with some words of hope following the recent earthquake and tsunami devastation in Japan. Genki Sudo accompanied his video with these words of hope:

“The unprecedented disasters unfolding in Japan; earthquakes, tsunami, and nuclear explosions, will somehow change things to come. And to send my message about this, I have expressed it here with World Order. These disasters can be interpreted as a turning point for civilization. Austria: The World Bodypainting Festival

Since 1998, the world’s most colourful event has taken place every year in Austria. The “World Bodypainting Festival” is the biggest art event in the bodypainting theme and ten thousands of visitors admire the wonderful work of the participants. Aritsts from 40 nations worldwide come to this unique event and put body art into the mountain and lake scenery.

Pörtschach at the lake Wörthersee near the state capital Klagenfurt is the new location for the next years. The festival week is held from 27th June - 3rd July 2011.

Play Doh Car in London!

A life size Play-Doh replica of the Chevrolet Orlando MPV, created to mark the launch of the seven-seater, has been turning heads on the streets of London.

The sculpture was created out of 1.5 tonnes of blue Play-Doh, by a team of eight model makers who worked on it for two-week period. Created as a marketing scheme for the launch of the Orlando MPV in the UK, the 4.6-meters-long, 1.8-meters-wide Play-Doh Chevrolet has set a new record for the world’s largest Play-Doh sculpture.

What is Art?

I got to thinking about this subject after reading my son, Keegan's senior project report on graffiti. It was titled Graffiti: An Act of Vandalism or a Form of Art? So... What is art? Here was his conclusion after all his research (22 typed pages in fact): "I believe that graffiti can be art and vandalism. The most beautiful piece of graffiti can be done illegally and still be art . It may be vandalism by definition, but that does not take away the fact that it was made with creativity and imagination."

I looked up the definition: Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items (often with symbolic significance) in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. So really, art is in the eye of the beholder, right? I found some unique pieces of art and thought I'd share them. What is your definition of art?

Czech-American artist Michael Kukla drills cell-like forms and structures into marble, wood, slate, and other such materials. His works on paper are similarly abstract and organic, evoking biological forms.

Who doesn’t know them? The cracks in the roads that make driving and walking way less comfortable? Juliana Santacruz Herrera has had the funny idea to turn these unwelcome side effects of ‘nature at play’ into something more pleasant by filling the gaps with bright and colorful strands of yarn. Juliana currently fills potholes in Paris. Although her work might not be for eternity, it surely inspires some Parisian passers by to smile.

There is an inner hippie in me that really really loves these painted trees that artist Curtis Killorn has been installing around Colorado. If you go to Burning Man this year, you can see some of Killorn’s trees.

Paul Fryer’s sculptures and installations seem to come from a not-too-distant future dystopia where the joke of civilization, organized religion, and technology has been revealed to us.

The Power Of Books

Storytime

From the moment I could read, I fell in love. A great book is like a piece of art...if it touches you emotionally and you can relate to it in some way, it makes you love it. You just can't help it.

As a kid, books were my salvation, a harbor from the storm of my dysfunctional family. I had books stacked up next to my bed because we didn't have a bookshelf. And that was ok by me, they were closer to where I read at night. I devoured paperback after paperback. I remember ordering books from school (Scholastic) because they were cheap and I didn't have a lot of money. I would rush into class everyday hoping my new books had arrived.

It soon became my passion to be a writer. I remember loving the Wizard of Oz as a kid and making up my own stories with the characters from this beloved movie. What happened to them after the movie ended? I wondered. Poetry was also something I love to read and write.

The Reader

I still have the goal of writing a book, one that pertains to my family's generational struggle with mental illness. I am reading a book right now, called Annie's Ghosts, about a nephew searching for clues about a mentally ill aunt. She died in a mental institution without him ever knowing she existed. His mother said she was an only child. We have come a long way since people hid their mentally ill relatives, but we have a long way to go. I want to write a story that helps people really understand and become educated about mental illness. I try to do this in my paintings as well.

Asking me my favorite book would almost be like asking me which of my kids do I love most. You just can't do it. But here are a few of my favorite authors: Stephen King, Jane Austen, Edgar Allen Poe, Harper Lee, and Charlotte Bronte.

ONE of my many favorites books is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962), by Ken Kesey. "But the rest are even scared to open up and laugh. You know, that's the first thing that got me about this place, that there wasn't anybody laughing. I haven't heard a real laugh since I came through that door, do you know that? Man, when you lose your laugh you lose your footing."

Ursula's words on the memories of a disappearing childhood:
This piece is quite special to me, as many of the objects surrounding the girl in the image are similar to the kinds of things that I loved to surround myself with as a child. As an only child, toys and books took on a special kind of significance…a means to keep my mind active and occupied whenever I spent time alone. They were also a comfort and something to escape to whenever social situations became too much, which was a regular occurrence. That sounds quite unhappy, but it wasn’t so bad :)

Bio:

I'm a self-taught photographer, currently based in the city of Norwich, in the United Kingdom. I always enjoyed taking photographs in my native country, Australia, but only began to take photography seriously after I moved to the UK. What started as a simple goal to improve as a photographer quickly became a passion for developing as an artist as well. I love to convey a sense of dream, magic and mystery in my work, and to engage the imagination and emotions of my viewers. I post photography work under my own name, but post my more adventurous work under the alias of 'RabbitHeart'.

I participated in a group exhibition at the Assembly House in Norwich in March 2010, and held my first solo exhibition there in December 2010. Gustav Klimt, The Kiss

No artist paints without the inspiration of those you have painted before them. Here are my two favorite artists who inspired me. Please share yours:)

Gustav Klimt had me as a fan from the first moment I saw "The Kiss." The colors, the patterns, the romance all amazed me. Even his more sombre pieces like "Life and Death", fascinated me. I'm sure his Tree Of Life inspired my love and later painting of curly, swirly trees.

I also fell in love with Marc Chagall and his lovely, dreamy art. The first piece I saw of Chagall's was "Amoureux de Vence" and I had to buy a print of it right away! It was one of the first prints I put on my wall as an adult. I know my dreamy, other-worldly paintings have been inspired by Chagall.

Gustav Klimt Bio
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was one of the most innovative and controversial artists of the early twentieth century. The son of an engraver, he studied at the State School of Applied Arts in Vienna. In the 1880s and 1890s he produced murals for public buildings -- including Vienna's Burgtheater and new Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum) -- in the prevailing classical-realist style. Klimt's style grew increasingly experimental, however, and his murals for Vienna University, commissioned by the State in 1894, were roundly attacked by critics for their fantastical imagery and their bold, decorative style. Partly in response to this reaction, in 1897 Klimt helped form the Secession, a group of artists dedicated to challenging the conservative Academy of Fine Arts. Influenced by European avant-garde movements represented in the annual Secession exhibitions, Klimt's mature style combined richly decorative surface patterning with complex symbolism and allegory, often with overtly erotic content.

After 1900 he concentrated on portraits and landscapes, although he also produced two of his greatest murals during this period -- The Beethoven Frieze, exhibited at the Secession in 1902, and decorations for the Palais Stoclet in Brussels (1904-1911). Klimt spent most of his summers on the Attersee, near Salzburg, where he drew inspiration for many of his landscapes, and where he painted some of his best-known works, including The Kiss of 1907-8.

Marc Chagall's Bio:
Marc Chagall was born in 1887 to a poor Jewish family in Russia. He was the eldest of nine children. Chagall began to display his artistic talent while studying at a secular Russian school, and despite his father’s disapproval, in 1907 he began studying art with Leon Bakst in St. Petersburg. It was at this time that his distinct style that we recognize today began to emerge. As his paintings began to center on images from his childhood, the focus that would guide his artistic motivation for the rest of his life came to fruition.

In 1910, Chagall, moved to Paris for four years. It was during this period that he painted some of his most famous paintings of the Jewish village, and developed the features that became recognizable trademarks of his art. Strong and bright colors began to portray the world in a dreamlike state. Fantasy, nostalgia, and religion began to fuse together to create otherworldly images.

In 1914, before the outbreak of World War I, Chagall held a one-man show in Berlin, exhibiting work dominated by Jewish images. During the war, he resided in Russia, and in 1917, endorsing the revolution, he was appointed Commissar for Fine Arts in Vitebsk and then director of the newly established Free Academy of Art. In 1922, Chagall left Russia, settling in France one year later. He lived there permanently except for the years 1941 - 1948 when, fleeing France during World War II, he resided in the United States. Chagall's horror over the Nazi rise to power is expressed in works depicting Jewish martyrs and refugees.

In addition to images of the Jewish world, Chagall's paintings are inspired by themes from the Bible. His fascination with the Bible culminated in a series of over 100 etchings illustrating the Bible, many of which incorporate elements from folklore and from religious life in Russia.

Israel, which Chagall first visited in 1931 for the opening of the Tel Aviv Art Museum, is likewise endowed with some of Chagall's work, most notably the twelve stained glass windows at Hadassah Hospital and wall decorations at the Knesset.

Chagall received many prizes and much recognition for his work. He was also one of very few artists to exhibit work at the Louvre in their lifetime.

I know from being an artist myself, that art can heal. Whether it's painting, sculpture, photography, it doesn't matter. It's the ability to express ourselves. To let out the pain and anger, fear and hope. That's why it really saddens me that in schools today art is being cut out. Hardly funded or non-existent. I found some touching children's art: from abused children, to Haitian children who survived the earthquakes. All expressed themselves through art. Some to tell of the horrors they have locked inside, some to tell of the hope in their hearts. Psychologists even use art to help children and adults heal alike. It helps lessen the pain so one can move forward. Every time I paint I feel a part of myself released and healed. Let's not forget the importance of art and healing....find an art program near you and help the healing continue:)

What is your favorite art tool?

This week I discovered a new and fun paint brush, called the Funny Brush. Maybe you've seen it. It's more geared to children, but I thought it looked fun and unique and I wanted to try it. I am always on the hunt for new tools to create texture. So I purchased three of them and tried it out just this week on my new painting, "Shaking The Dreamland Tree." I only used it for some small white dots to create the affect of dreams floating down. But I do see some great potential here, and I can't wait to try it some more.

I found the Funny Brush when I was searching for sponges. My backgrounds are always sponged on, using layers of colors to create texture. So I have to say sponges are my favorite art tool. I like to use ones with large pores to create swirling shapes of colors. I am always looking for neat sponges I haven't tried yet.

Are You Creative?

The answer to this question is a resounding YES! After reading an article in Oprah's magazine about how we all are creative in some way or another, I decided to blog about this concept. I myself know it to be true through experience....

My oldest son Keegan, who is almost 18, was born to play sports. From the moment he could walk and talk he wanted us to pitch a ball to him. He played baseball and soccer for many years. Who knew he had a creative side? I always encouraged my kids to try new things and if they showed interest in something, I supported it! Whether it was sports or music or art. But Keegan never showed any interest in anything creative until he was in 10th grade. He took a few art classes and started drawing. Who knew he could draw so well? He had a natural ability, and in May I want to share some of his pen drawings when I show my own art at the Essex Studios Open House. I attend this art walk twice a year as a guest artist.

My other son, Lucas, was also in sports, but now music is his thing....he's a drummer and plays in his high school's steel drum band. He amazes me with how natural it comes to him. He practices almost every day without anyone telling him to practice. I can see he truly loves to play.

My daughter, Ashley, wanted to play violin from the time she was 6. Music was her passion and now writing is what she enjoys most. She would like to write her memoir someday. Ashley was the one that showed creativity right from the start.

My three kids are so different, but they all had a creative talent. Just because it doesn't show up right away, doesn't mean it's not there at all. I didn't start painting until my late 30's.

So you can't paint, draw or play an instrument. Maybe you can cook and use your creative talents there. Maybe you are creative with your home and decorating. Or maybe you are good at landscaping and creating a beautiful outdoor scene. Creativity can be displayed in so many different ways!

So why is it so important to find that inner creativity? I think it releases so much of what is inside of us that we cannot share on a regular basis. I feel so free and content when I am painting. It has saved me countless times during stressful moments in my life. It's a way to release a part of yourself you cannot do any other way. Being creative shares yourself with the outside world. It's a window into you.

I believe we all have some creative talent somewhere inside us if we take the time to find it! We may have to do a little digging, but it is there!

Picasso Paints Dog On Plate

I came across this article online from the NY Times. It just struck me as funny that Picasso created this:) A simple dog named Lump. Go figure:)

When forgotten Picassos aren’t turning up in the most unlikely places, they’re depicting the most unlikely subjects. A piece of dinnerware he painted on and gave to the photojournalist David Douglas Duncan, which Mr. Duncan has donated to the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, may not compare to the cache of nearly 300 works that a French electrician says he was given by Picasso’s second wife. But the plate is noteworthy for what it depicts: a dachshund named Lump, owned by Mr. Duncan in the 1950s.

The Harry Ransom Center said on Wednesday that the plate was decorated by Picasso for Mr. Duncan at Picasso’s Villa La Californie in Cannes, France, on April 19, 1957 (and provided photographs of Picasso at work to corroborate the story). Mr. Duncan brought Lump to Picasso’s villa, and over lunch Picasso asked if the dog had ever had his own plate. When Mr. Duncan said no, Picasso picked up a nearby brush and proceeded to paint Lump on the plate Picasso had been eating from.

The plate will be displayed at the Harry Ransom Center starting Tuesday as part of its exhibition “Culture Unbound: Collecting in the Twenty-First Century.” The center said that similar plates bearing Picasso’s handiwork had sold for up to $90,000, though it has no plans to sell its latest donation.

Poetry is a form of art that I have always loved since I was a young girl. I find it to be a very powerful tool in healing and sharing thoughts.

This week I decided to share a poem I found on facebook that a friend posted. Some of you may have seen it because I shared it on facebook. Too bad the author is unknown. What if everyone here was exactly the same?
What if everyone answered to only one name?
If somebody yelled "Chris!" then we'd all have to go.

And our feet were all small and our eyes were all blue

Have we all not felt "different" at one time or another for some reason. This poem is meaningful to me because my daughter suffers from mental illness and she feels different and alone often. I felt different as a child because I knew my family was different. My mother suffered from mental illness. So this poem hits home to me. The painting I have posted with this poem is called Two Minds. I tried to capture my daughter's feeling of wanting to be happy, though her mind showed her a world that was not. I think it goes well with the idea of being "different."

This Month's Featured Artist, Charles Moore

When I was trying to find my next featured artist, it was Martin Luther King Day. I thought, why not feature one of the famous civil rights photographers that helped document what our nation went through at that time. So this month's featured artist is Charles Moore, who died this last March. Moore gave faces to the civil rights movement, made it all too real for the viewer. From police dogs, fire hoses and beatings to the marches, Moore brought the fight to us until the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. His photographs are a powerful message and reminder today. They still are hard for me to view. Thank you Charles Moore for your contribution to our history!

New Blog Format

Just wanted to say I'm sort of changing my blog format. I'm kind of slow after a two week vacation, so I will start fresh next week. I will now feature one artist a month and the other posts will be things that pertain to art. Products, websites, anything interesting dealing with art. Yes, that was my 2011 surprise, learning from a kind stranger (thanks Alex) that my art had been stolen and used on Amazon.com to sell an e-book. Luckily, Amazon responded immediately and took it down at my request. My name was right on the image, so it was kind of a no-brainer for them.

Some wonderful facebook friends (thanks Julie, Madison and Tara:)) led me to these websites, so please take a look at them at the bottom. More than likely all artists across the board will face this problem.

But what I learned through this ordeal, is that kind people are out there! This man, Alex, saw my name on the image and somehow got my email address and contacted me. He knew this person had stolen from him before, so he wanted to make sure she asked to use the photo. Then, my great, supportive facebook family came to my rescue, giving me support, information, and some even went to Amazon to complain about the e-book. I was touched by all the support.

It's weird how violated you feel when your art is stolen. My paintings are like my children, each has special meaning and came from my experiences. Maybe people who steal someone else's art don't get that. It's personal.

For the next two Thursdays I won't be posting my blog...I am on vacation:) But I can't stop creating! Besides spending time with family and friends, I will creating some pendants with my art. It's so fun and relaxing! I don't have time to make them except on the weekends, so this will give me the opportunity to really be creative with them! I will post them in my Etsy store very soon!

I will also be sketching for my first paintings of the new year! I am excited about starting a new year of creating!

Bio:
After graduating from Social Studies in France, Nicole made a sharp turn and decided to follow a career as a window dresser. She studied fine-art for a while at: Ecole-des-Beaux-Arts" in Toulouse. This southern French town also called "The Pink City" because of its pinkish tiled roofs, is equally known as: "The City of Violets". The delicate fragrance of a special variety of violet is used in the perfume industry, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics as well as in confectionery and cooking.

After moving to the United States Nicole discovered digital painting in the 90's and fell in love with it, creating images with a mouse or (rarely) a tablet.
Fantasy subjects are her favorites! She paints by using her intuition to the fullest, listening to her inner voice, letting her mind wander. In other words, she does not plan any painting really, but let her subconscious pick some blotches of colors, some shapes that soon will develop into greater details, later to become important pieces of the artwork. It is not unusual for artists or writers to begin this way, invoking the muse! :-). Some artists, such as Cezanne and Rodin often spent a long time staring at their subjects before painting or sculpting. After a while, their consciousness would find interesting images hidden in the object of interest.

She draws inspiration from many things including traveling. She is drawn to old gardens as they retain memories from the past; all flowers, all trees, seem to exude memories. Cemeteries also hold special appeal to her, nothing dark about it, she just finds these places to be very peaceful and serene since early childhood, offering a very special beauty. Sometimes even insignificant objects like a rusty key, an old door, or a ray of sunshine on an old bench can all trigger a burst of creativity.

Some of her artworks, the colorful line of butterflies for instance, were heavily influenced by listening to light Opera and the cross-sensory associations triggered by involuntary "Synesthesia". Most of her butterflies are set in a stage-decor atmosphere similar to the stage settings associated with Opera.

About Zoe:
I started drawing when my husband and I moved to “the country” after college. There was really no social outlet, and not a lot to get involved in, and I was used to being completely immersed in school (I studied languages—spanish, arabic, english). I wanted color and fantasy, I was sort of trying to create a world. I still am. I was working on a novel (i just finished it), and i would be reading about physics or mythology or history, and the drawings helped me delve into the ideas on a different level. Drawing and painting does one thing for me, and then telling the story of it in words does another.

Along the way, I started posting on a blog, and through that I met Vesna (http://www.redbubble.com/people/vesnavd), and we started collaborating. We’ll talk about an idea or a story or a poem she’s working on, and I draw from that. Other than vesna, my biggest influences are Remedios Varo, and the biography (Unexpected Journeys) about her by Janet Kaplan, which is amazing, and also Erzulie and Agwe of the voodoo pantheon, all of whom I write about a lot alongside my drawings.

Almost always, I’m exploring the idea that we can change reality by imagining a new one: that by believing an idea, then giving it form-say through art or fiction-we open a door, expanding the universe. which means that I don’t like to depict suffering, because I hope to increase joy and the possibility of magic; usually, I’m trying to feel the image I’m creating, that’s how it forms, and at some point, the image takes over. so I don’t want it to be painful.

My name is Ida Mary Walker Larsen, I am Danish/American, born of American mother and Danish father in 1981 in Denmark. I live with my man and our daughter Lyra, age 3.

I've been creative since I was a child, continuing to draw when my peers stopped, developing my own style ever since. When the internet became available to me at age 17 a whole new world opened up. My works can be seen as greeting cards with Tree Free Greetings, and puzzles with Buffalo Games, Canada Group, and others.
I create whatever comes pouring out of my carousel mind at any given moment. Could be surreal… could be romantic… could be poignant. It is as much of a journey for me, as being in a foreign country and deciding which road to walk down. One thing for sure is that I can’t hold it back. It is thrilling to see what new jewel I can pluck from my imagination, or what well-loved treasure I decide to bring out for a polish. Either way… it’s bound to attract some curious onlookers, who will either stick around to see what comes next, or who will head on down the road to find their own eclectic collection. All I hope is that I can at least tuck a little inspiration in their pocket before they go.

My artwork is a blend of photography, digital art, and traditional art. It is all self-taught.

By combining various methods of photography, digital manipulation, hand painting, and textured layering…I achieve the look I am after. I use an Intuos3 Wacom tablet, which is like a huge digital sketch pad. This allows me to utilize my traditional art skills in countless ways, in the same way someone might use charcoal on paper, or paint to canvas.

I decided to create some small 6" x 6" and 8" x 8" paintings for the holiday season. Perfect price ($25 and $35) for gift giving! Some are sold exclusively through Smart Group and Gallery. All of those from the gallery are $35 each.

At first I thought it would be difficult to cram all the things I like to paint into a small square! But now that I have done almost 20 of them, I think I am getting the hang of it:)

Yi Wen Seow, also known as Wen, is a self taught artist, currently in her final year studying Bachelor of Architecture at Victoria University of Wellington. She has been painting since young and started selling her artworks online in 2004. Since then her artworks have graced many private collections around New Zealand, Australia, US, and UK.
Her paintings are largely contemporary and based strongly on colours to allure and express her ideas. She draws inspiration from her intuition and interpretation on life experience and her works are highly personal, with a love for the whimsical. She is fond of painting figures and trees as the human body is always intriguing to paint, and trees are forgiving.

Bio:
I am a 2010 graduate of the Art institute of Pittsburgh with my BS in Graphic Design. I am currently obtaining my Master’s degree in Education Media, Design and Technology at Full Sail University. I plan to pursue my PhD in Education Theory after I graduate from Full Sail with my MS in 2011. One day I hope to be a published author of children’s books, and also teach Graphic Design and Photography at a University.
I have been a photographer for many years, and have become proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite, with particular emphasis on Photoshop. I enjoy creating artistic photo-composite images, and I am currently writing a book and e-book based on some of my photographic characters. A little about Deborah in her words....

Art has always been a major part of my life. As a child, I would draw strange little creatures which were a combination of a kangaroo and a cat and color them all different colors, Some had dots, others stripes. No two were ever alike. When I was finished with the multicolored creatures, they would all be cut out with my little plastic scissors. I would make little ‘pouches’ taping them to the ‘mother’ and insert tiny kangaroo/cat replicas as their babies. Seems like I did hundreds of these, proudly showing them to my ever patient Mother. For my 5th Birthday, I received a finger painting set, spending hours mixing different colors and painting with my fingers. My dear Mother was a wise woman who took notice of my interest in art and always made sure I had plenty of crayons, paper, colored pencils and water colors available. In school, we were given rulers, protractors, etc. But to me, these were just more tools for art…..to make geometric shapes and perfect circles colored in all different colors (of course!). Needless to say, my math grades were not the best. When I was 15, my Mother enrolled me in private art lessons taught by a wonderful person. Her name was London Bridges, and yes, that was her real name. She was one of the most influential people in my life, Well known in the art circles in Birmingham, Alabama and a great artist in her own right. A happy, bubbly person who lovingly critiqued my work. One day she told my Mother, “Deborah loves color and I simply can’t keep her brush out of the red paint.” Thank you, Mother, for your encouraging words and teaching me everything I know. As you can see, I do love color and still have trouble keeping my brush out of the red paint, which, by the way, is my favorite color.

Bio:
I have always loved art, beginning as a child. I studied art at school, and later at college, and as a young woman, started painting in oils. This absorbed me, and I would paint from dawn to dusk, often without a break.
When the children came along, this was no longer possible, so the easel and paints were put away for many years, and I turned to photography as my creative outlet. I had a darkroom, and spent many happy (and frustrating) hours developing my photos. I loved this, but it never quite touched the spot that I felt when painting.
Then, digital cameras arrived, and not long afterward, I discovered Photoshop. Pure joy and delight!! I think I must have covered every Photoshop tutorial I could find. I have not looked back since. Now the children have grown up and flown the nest, I have as much time as I could wish for, to loose myself in the creative process.
My work only really took off after I joined RedBubble. The support, friendship and encouragement I received here, really motivated me and gave a huge boost to my confidence. It is a fabulous community. Interestingly, “The Sisterhood” was one of the first groups I joined.
I treasure several of my works, simply because I have a strong personal connection to them. But the work I am choosing here is Hush Little Baby, Don’t You Cry
It is my most recent work, and reflects my commitment to raising awareness about child abuse. I spent most of my career, working with abused children and their families, and it is dear to my heart.
This image is influenced also by the artists I studied and loved in my youth. Turner was, and is, my favourite artist of all time, and more recently, I have come to love the work of Edward Hicks whose influence you can see here. So, light and infused colours are important to me in this image, and many others.
You will be aware also, of my commitment to feminism, and the importance to me of my fellow sisters.

Instead of just featuring one artist, I will lead you to several I met through the Essex Studios Art Walk I have attended. I love going to the Essex because I get to know so many artists of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.

The Essex building at one time was a large tailoring business. The Essex art Studios resulted from the decline of the tailoring business. The owner decided to sub-divide the building into studios. Work started in 2000 and is still going on today. To date, there are over one hundred artists.

The diversity within the Essex studios is fantastic. It is a building of diverse arts. One can get a good feel for the arts by touring the facility during the ESAG sponsored Art Walks.

The Art Walks
Come explore over 100 individual artist studios featuring unique and original artworks in a wide variety of media: oil, acrylic, watercolor, multimedia, ink and sculpture, among others! These Essex Studios Artist Group sponsored events are free and open to the general public, and are a great opportunity for people to experience a building wide open house featuring the wide variety and creativity of local artists at the Essex Studios.

Christian Alexander

I love Christian's art, especially the ones he has done on wood. His tiny details and magical themes make me smile:) Christian displayed his art across from me this October.

Christian Alexander is a local Cincinnati artist. Born in New Jersey, Christian has been a Cincinnati resident since 1980. Christian has been drawing and painting his whole life, which led to studying Fine Art at D.A.A.P. in the Unversity of Cincinnati. Christian’s artwork attempts to invoke a sense of wonder and a sense of humor. Bright colors and strong linework are used to catch your eye and make you smile. While his academic influences range from the old masters to native arts, Christian has always had a strong love for animation, cartoonists, children’s book illustrators and science educators. My work is largely concerned with the female form and bright solid areas of colour, but over time it has also become much more abstract and I have developed a fascination for digital design. I have Fibromyalgia, which was triggered by a virus in 2007. This has left me too disabled to ever teach again, so I have begun to explore my creativity with renewed enthusiasm. The fibromyalgia has resulted in many frustrations the main one of which is that I am not always able to draw and paint using traditional methods. Both the iPhone and the iPad have proved to be truly accessible creative tools and not only appeal to my love of technology but also enable me to create almost whenever & where ever I want.

"I try to explore the borderline between painting , freehand drawing , collage and computer media .I have always been influenced by textiles ,especially print and dye methods.

When I go about making a painting or a fashion illustration I start by responding to something which is beautiful or quirky or fascinating to me in some very personal way.It can be anything ,from a book , a magazine , a poem ,some hieroglyphics, whatever. It can be something ancient or new ,an old master drawing or an icon.
When I have decided upon the central motif I start to paint it ,and all my concentration and attention ,and the love I have for the object goes into the painting.

There is so much for me to respond to . Not just the imagery , but the paint and the materials themselves and the physical quality of the masks which I make .
Sometimes a mark has an intrinsic quality or character which can not be passeinteresting .

I am a self-taught artist. I grew up in a very small community of 1,000 people.
While we did have a public school...we didn't have art classes, girls sports, or a lot of other things most schools offer these days.

I 'dabbled' in art, whenever the opportunity presented itself, but I didn't get 'serious' until I was confined to bed while carrying my fourth child.
My dear husband, sensing how boring it was to just lie there and look at the same old programs on TV, bought me an art set, some canvas paper and 'set me free'.
I came as close as I could to the paintings on the backs of Reader's Digest magazines. Every member of my family got an original painting for Christmas the following year and I have been painting ever since.

Inspiration

The inspiration for most of my paintings is my own childhood. My childhood on the outside seemed ideal in the beautiful countryside. But there was trouble within that could not be so easily seen. My mother struggled with mental illness. And now I watch my daughter do the same. Her story is also woven into my paintings, where my story leaves off hers begins. Almost entwined at times. A bond of newly discovered self-love and acceptance.

She is a strong young woman now, but her struggle continues. She amazes me with her ability to deal with what's been given to her and not complain or constantly ask, why me? I use that strength and self-love she is learning to have and I paint it. I try and paint the colors of her spirit as much as I can, to capture that unbridled personality. But she shines much too bright for me to ever do her true justice. But I will continue to paint of hope and love and all the ways I wish the world would be. She and my inner child will guide me.

Photography has become a consuming hobby over the last few years after receiving a ‘posh’ digital camera as a birthday gift from my husband.

We live in in a beautiful location – a farmhouse in rural North-East England and share our lives with our family, friends and animal companions .

Our eight rescue cats, an elderly black cocker spaniel dog and an assortment of hens and ducks – are very often my photographic models. Although, more often than not, I manage to take a shot of the space that they occupied rather than the intended picture!

I also have a love of antique and vintage ‘stuff’ – these subjects I find kinder to the photographer as they tend not to disappear at speed! I enjoy collecting and renovating relics from the past and displaying them in ‘old fashioned’ settings and tints.

Working with my images in Photoshop is a joy – I can lose hours without noticing the time slip by – there is so much to learn!

KRZYSZTOF LOZOWSKI was born in 31. 12. 1970 in Sosnowiec. In 1990 he graduated from
the secondary school of Art in Katowice. Later he studied Film Animation in
Bielsko Biała. In 1993 he graduated from School of Teaching. In 1998 he
graduated from the University of Silesia in Katowice (the Cieszyn branch)
where he became a member of the Faculty of Pedagogic and Artistic Education,
with specialization in painting and drawing.

Lozowski is also a member of the Union of Polish Artists and Designers.

His techniques include oil painting, drawing, watercolor painting and pastel
drawing using his own techniques and computer graphics.

The creations of Krzysztof Lozowski are very diversfied. His variety of
techniques and expressions are all covered in the mist of mystery. Through

The Seer of Wisdom
This hand created clay wallhanging of a mystical OWL was created using the slab as a canvas. It has been hanging in our home for a few years because I felt a bit attached to it. Now I feel willing to release it and sell it. I am currently working on a new OWL sculpture that is a very powerful Piece. Initially, I began sculpting owls because my Mother has always had a fondness for them.In fact, I gifted her the first baby owl piece that I made many years ago. We were able to rescue that Piece from the four feet of flood water from hurricane Katrina. This one has a powerful energy and also went thru Katrina. When hand-painting chemical glazes which I mix and then paint on the clay piece, I do not get "feedback" as a painter does. I have to wait until the fires of the Kiln heat the piece and transform the glazes. After hours of glazing, I always surrender and hope that the colors in the glaze turn out as I see them in my Mind's eye. Sometimes I am fortunate and sometimes I am not. My hand sculpted “Art in Clay” creations are inspired by my daydreams, night visions, synchronistic life experiences and immense reverence for ALL of Nature's gifts. My work explores the intimate dance between forces of reality and fantasy, light and dark, as well as permanence and impermanence. Artist's Statement

Colours are not symbols to be interpreted, they are tools for the feel of a moment. My favourite colour is red, but I believe myself to be quite successful in showing that its meaning depends on the context rather than what it has historically come to signify.

My favourite techniques are oil and canvas and ink and dip pen. It is easier to convey emotions in oil and colour; it leaves a stronger impression on the public even if they only catch one glimpse of the work. With the dip pen, I can weave in my roots and memories of past generations, apply my interpretations of their mythological patterns and symbols. The symbols are still there in oil, but with oil, it is the colour that dominates -- I myself am more strongly present in those works, and so is the world of today. My graphics tend to be symbolistic and conceptual, my paintings impressionistic and emotional.

As I am more interested in the universe within, I have given up anatomical drawing; even in my art school days, my best work was always done when the model had gone... To see within, we look within. I express the way I feel things, not the way I see them -- after all, to appreciate the surface, all one has to do is open one's eyes. And anyone can do that.

My work in art and writing are life-long passions; gifts I was born with. God chose to make me a very creative person and I am so thankful for that! Art Supplies

Many of you may already know this, but I thought I'd share in case some of you don't:) I used to shop at our local Michael's art/craft store to get all my art supplies. But I have finally learned the best way to buy is in bulk online. I almost exclusively shop at dickblick.com now. I used to spend on average $100 a week on supplies, now I spend about $150-$200 a month. And I get more by buying in bulk! I wish I knew this sooner!! Canvases especially are cheaper this way. Plus they have more sizes than Michaels.

Bio:
I live and work in Auckland, New Zealand. My medium of choice and main focus is oil painting although I also work in other mediums including acrylic, mixed media, polymer sculpture and collage.

My works are contemporary, sometimes stylised, subtle, free and colourful, but can also be whimsical, quirky, playful and naive. I love a good laugh.

Where does it all come from? I paint what I am, I paint my dreams, everyday life, my family, my hopes and my history – I paint from the heart, from the inner sanctum. Over time images of the human figure, faces and elongated creatures have found themselves a permanent place in many of the paintings – and boats and birds have become symbols of journeys that souls travel. Fruit has become a symbol for food for the soul, flowers a symbol for love.

Techniques I use include alla primo, impasto and sgraffito, also layering through glazing – these are often combined but regularly employed according to what the specific work may demand in a heuristic way. I often allow the painting to take off in a different direction by letting it flow rather than follow my initial design to the letter.

Artists I admire and whom have influenced my work include Botero, Modigliani, Rita Angus, Colin McCahon, June Jolly – china painter, and Karl Amundsen. My work is held in private collections in Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Sweden.

I saw Jaeda's art on Red Bubble and was amazed! Her art is so open and honest and full of emotion! It really spoke to me, especially The Red Jane Series. I can relate to this series because I was sexually abused as a child and so was my mother. I think getting the word out there and talking about this subject can only help it not happen to others. I thank Jaeda for being brave and telling her story with words and images. It's a story I think many of us can relate to.

About this Image:
This creepy creation is a layering of two photographs. The first one being a picture from my mother’s childhood photo album. Originally, she was standing with her older brother. I digitally removed him, reconstructed the space he was removed from and inserted a self-portrait, photographed in my studio. The blood stain i added on the left, represents the pain, stain and taint of surviving childhood sexual abuse.

The poem (below) expresses how the cycle of abuse continues from one generation to the next when we don’t speak up, when we don’t acknowledge, when we remain silent. My mother didn’t speak up and didn’t cope with what happened to her and, as a result, could not bring herself to acknowledge that the same type of abuse, was being repeated with her daughter (me).

Red Stains

My mother was a beautiful little girl
forced to wear the red stains of,
early trauma and sexualization.

In the womb i felt her psychic wounds,
feelings buried alive, never die.
The red stains of pain
refusing to wash off,
her porcelain skin.

Here she is surrounded by me,
as the woman for which,
the cycle repeats.

I too, fell victim – to predatory hands.
Marked with red stains,
I became, “Red Jane”,
cut with the same knife -
traumatized by the same pain.

I found a way to remove the red stains
from my palest skin.
Beauty for Ashes
set me free.
I wish my mother could discover
the same kind of relief.

How did you get started drawing?"

It's the first thing I'm asked, and my answer is:

"O. J. Simpson."

As a broadcast journalist for the past thirty-five years, I've covered a lot of big stories. One of the most sensational was the 1995 Simpson murder trial. My assignment for CBS Radio News (when I wasn't in the courtroom in Los Angeles) was to sit in a New York studio and anchor the network's gavel-to-gavel coverage of the trial. With the lion's share of time taken up by testimony, I had long stretches with little to say.

I began sketching the faces of the witnesses on paper napkins that had been left in the studio. When I finished one, I'd thumbtack it to the wall. After a while, I'd accumulated a small collection. And co-workers took note. Armed with their encouragement, I decided to give drawing a try in my off hours.

My first effort was a small portrait of the great bluesman John Lee Hooker. Not bad, I said to myself, not bad at all. But it didn't last. After only a few other drawings, I stopped.

And I didn't pick up the pencils and pad again for thirteen years.

What prodded me to start again?

A good friend loaned me John Daido Loori's "The Zen of Creativity." It's a wonderful book, and it showed me the way back. That was in the spring of 2008, and I'm still at it.

The response to my work has been very gratifying. I had my first show this fall in Westchester County, New York, where I live with my wife, Deborah. Our son, Chris, is a broadcaster in Illinois.

I began my career in radio in 1968. Since 1990, I've been a Correspondent for CBS News. Each weekday morning, I anchor "The World News Roundup" on the CBS Radio Network.

Catherine's dreamy, angelic paintings caught my eye when I saw them on Red Bubble. I love the colors and the "other worldly" feeling of these three paintings. She has so many beautiful ones, but these are my favorites!

Born in the Top end of australia – Darwin in the Northern territory then living in a town called “Batchelor” .. 60 miles south of Darwin for the first 7 years of my life.
I was lucky enough to have the “bush” as my playground as a child growing up.
bush lifestyle gave me a definite respect for the land ,it’s creatures /inhabitants and also gave me a real sense of curiousity for all things pertaining to nature…and creation in general.

And there are no frames dividing between my works – they are like transitions from one tale into another, free wondering in thought and space. No wonder that people looking at my paintings raise associations of carpets. Some might desire to start a journey on a fairy-tale flying carpet that would them away from their reality, while others might wish such a colorful carpet would bring them prosperity and warmth, help them stand with both feet on the ground...

The sages of Tibet consider that between the ages of 17 and 70 we are at the same life stage, and that the eyes of a 69-year-old might shine just like those of a 20-year-old, all depending on our inside well-being… For me, the art should help creating this shining from inside…

Every time a painting is finished, moreover when it is sold, it is time to say good-bye. Separation from works is an important life lesson. It teaches me to part from things easily, to leave the old burdens behind and make room for new experiences.

But still I feel a strong bond with my paintings even when they start their own independent lives, just like grown-up children. It is my great hope that my babies add color and kindness to this world. It’s also my great pleasure to keep in touch with my babies, to feel their gratitude. That is why people’s feedback is so important to me.

I am a self-taught, self-representing artist, currently living in Oklahoma, USA. I have been blessed to be able to create art since my early childhood years, and have been working as a full time professional artist for over three years. Nothing brings me more joy then to glide my brush across an empty canvas, and give it life.

Since I began to make my work available to the public in Fall of 2005, I have sold over 2000+ pieces. My work continues to grow in demand, and increase in value. My art is currently being collected & exhibited worldwide by collectors such as celebrities, musicians, politicians and many executive offices.

I am a self-taught artist, originally from Germany, who has always enjoyed painting and photography. However I chose my career in the nonprofit sector and I almost forgot about my art when I started travelling and exploring different countries with restricted baggage allowances on flights there was just never enough space to carry around canvases and paintings.
But then about two and a half years ago I discovered digital art (yay, it all fits onto a little USB-stick!!!). Drawing has a very calming and relaxing effect on me, and the positive feedback I get from others inspires me to continue.

I am a self taught artist. I used to draw comic book heros as a kid. Somehow I took a 25 year break from art. Late one night about 4 years ago I tried art once again. Late at night is my time to create and debate to myself what the canvas or medium is trying to say to me.I am truly a multi medium artist. I love using Acrylic, Oil , Watercolor, Oil Pastels, Indian Ink and Watercolor Pencils. I have been searching a long time for a place to show my work and offer support to other talented artist.

What I'm working on...

I will not be posting paintings this week, but updates on the children's book, The Sleep Fairy and Her Magic Sheep, that I am working on. The story is finished and now I have three paintings done for the illustrations. I am very excited! Just trying to get suggestions and do some research for the best self-publishing site for me! Not as easy as I thought, but I'm getting there!

Abril's Bio:

When I was a little girl, you would always find me drawing
dolls and action figures. Thanks to my very supportive
mother, who never put any limits on my creativity and
imagination, I was exposed to art books and became
fascinated with drawing what I could capture from them.

My style of art began in the earliest stages of
my teenage years, when I became influenced by the Gothic
Subculture, which since then has always inspired me to paint.
After being accepted into a school of fine art in Lleida , Spain, I moved away from my family
and became more interested in painting every waking hour. Unfortunately i did not learn what i know do for a living, so i consider myself self taught ,learning what ever i could from books, dvds and by staring at other artist work very very close. Inspired by the Example of my
brother Carlos, who traveled as much as he could and lived life to the fullest, I continued
traveling and meeting interesting artist around Europe, making friends and learning from others.

Working with different artist and styles has stimulated me to create a fantasy world of surreal
creatures with enormous eyes. I also draw much inspiration from day to day living and my
surroundings.

I'm living in Arizona and Mexico City. The time I've spent in Mexico over the last 10years has been a source of inspiration. For the last few years I have been creating digital prints. First with Photoshop and now Illustrator. Vector is more flexible. It has a more graphic look than bitmap paintings. I'm interested in seeing these works in print and web, and licensed for murals, textiles, and products. A book of my work is scheduled for release in June 2010 by Sunbury Press. And licensing of some of my images is available from Getty/Flickr Images.

I became Facebook friends with Ginger, and she posted all these adorable creations she has made of clay. I loved them and had to do a feature on her! Here's a little about what Ginger does in her own words...
I have been using polymer clay for about 16 yrs now and I LOVE it! It started on accident actually. I was a single mom and could not afford a kiln. My friends mother showed me polymer clay and I have been hooked every since. I do a variety of things, I have always loved to try new crafts. Sooo.....that is why I have different types of items in my shop.
